PANIC DISORDER

Panic Disorder is an extreme form of Anxiety Disorder.

It affects 1 to 2% of adults in Australia every year.

The exact cause is unclear.

Panic attacks are sudden attacks of fear or anxiety in situations that most people do not find frightening.

Fear of having future panic attacks is very common.

Symptoms can include:

  • Heart palpitations
  • Sweating
  • Trembling or shaking
  • Shortness of breath or sensation of being smothered
  • Feeling of choking
  • Chest pain or discomfort
  • Nausea or abdominal distress
  • Feeling dizzy, unsteady, lightheaded, or faint
  • Derealisation (feeling ‘unreal’)
  • Depersonalisation (feeling detached from yourself)
  • Fear of losing control or going crazy
  • Fear of dying
  • Numbness or tingling sensations
  • Chills of hot flushes
  • Hypnotherapy assists the person to change negative interpretations into realistic assessments in a calm and controlled way, thereby diffusing the whole situation.
